HORSE RACING: Bob Baffert, Rafael Bejarano form imposing team at

Game On Dude, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, won Saturday's Grade I $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. (Benoit Photo)

ARCADIA - It was a big day at Santa Anita on Saturday for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Rafael Bejarano, who teamed up to win three of five $250,000 Grade I races.

It also was a good day for the track, which drew a crowd of 17,565 despite warm temperatures.

This is the second year of Santa Anita's autumn meet, which replaced the long-standing Oak Tree meet. Saturday's crowd was larger than any last year.

The big win for the team of Baffert and Bejarano came in the 10th race on the 11-race card, the Awesome Again Stakes, with Game On Dude showing he is on his game.

Game On Dude, a 5-year-old gelding, went off as the 2-1 favorite and didn't disappoint his backers in winning going away by 3 1/4 lengths over Nonios.

Game On Dude, who now is headed for the Breeders' Cup Classic, covered the 1 1/8 miles on dirt in 1:48.98.

Richard's Kid, formerly trained by Baffert and now handled by rival Doug O'Neill, had to struggle for third by a neck.

The string of Grade I races began with the sixth, the renamed Chandelier Stakes. Baffert and Bejarano won that one with Executiveprivilege.

Then came the FrontRunner Stakes, and they won that one with Power Broker in an upset over O'Neill-trained Know More, a distant second.

"I was hoping for this kind of outcome," Baffert said.

No kidding.

"They were all coming into their races really well. I'm glad that Power Broker showed his stuff.

"We still have a ways to go, and as long as they all stay healthy and keep moving forward that's the main goal."

Power Broker was coming off a Del Mar meet in which he finished second, third and a disappointing fourth in three races.

Baffert blamed Del Mar's synthetic track for the poor showing and added the horse recently had a great workout.

The next race for Power Broker, after his impressive victory, will be the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The FrontRunner Stakes, formerly the Norfolk, was renamed after the restaurant atop of the Santa Anita grandstands.

The Chandelier, formerly the Oak Leaf, gets its new name from the legendary bar in the Turf Club.

The Awesome Again, formerly the Goodwood, is named after a horse bred by Santa Anita owner Frank Stronach.

Game On Dude, who finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic when ridden by Chantal Sunderland, is a son of Awesome Again.

All five Grade I races Saturday were part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.

The FrontRunner Stakes, a race for 2-year-olds, also was part of a new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" qualifying point system. It was one of the first two qualifiers.

The other was run earlier Saturday in Newmarket, England.

With his victory at Santa Anita, Power Broker earned 10 points toward qualifying for next year's Kentucky Derby.

Baffert is no fan of the new format.

"It's too early," he said. "I like the Breeders' Cup `Win and You're In.' They should have it where you win a big prep race and you're in the Kentucky Derby."

Bankruptcy Advice You Can Put To Use | Siben & Siben Long Island ...

TIP! Once you have completed the bankruptcy filing, you should take time to do something you enjoy. So many people become stressed when they file.

The process of filing for bankruptcy can bring both stress and relief into your life. You do have to sort through all of your finances and interact with a lot of people in the financial part of your life. However, after this is over, you can restore your finances and be free of bill collectors. The following are some useful ideas for facilitating a smooth bankruptcy.

TIP! If financial distress is making you depressed an internet support group for bankruptcy may help. Bankruptcy can cause a lot of stress and make you feel isolated from your friends.

If you filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you can still get a mortgage or a car loan. Of course, it?s difficult. You will be required to meet a trustee and be approved for a new loan. You will need to make a budget and prove that you will be able to afford your new loan payments. You also need to be prepared to answer questions about your need for the new item.

TIP! If you are facing financial difficulty, it may not be wise to go through with a divorce. Many people who divorce must immediately file bankruptcy because of unforeseen financial difficulties.

If you will be owing taxes, do not think bankruptcy is an easy escape. Therefore, you should not use any credit card if you are going to file bankruptcy. This is a little trick they try, assuming that a credit card balance won?t be looked at the same way. However, there are already bankruptcy laws in place for this. This will leave you with owed taxes and then credit card interest for it, too.

TIP! Examine all of the possible options available to you before you choose to file for bankruptcy. Analyze your situation when it comes to debt as you determine which type of debt can be easily discharged under bankruptcy.

Know what your lawyer is doing while your bankruptcy proceedings are underway. You need to know what?s going on so don?t be afraid to ask them questions. Law offices that are busy are known to make occasional errors. No matter what people say, lawyers are human too!

TIP! Your most important concern is to protect your home. You don?t have to lose your home just because you are filing for bankruptcy.

Do not feel free to start running up credit card bills immediately before you file. The temptation may be there to run up some purchases, but the courts do not look kindly upon this. Practice sound financial management to the greatest degree that you can. Now is always a good time start beginning sound fiscal habits with the future in mind.

One tip that is very applicable in situations of personal bankruptcy is to be certain of paying debts on time and in an amount greater than the minimum due. Some people assume that making only minimum payments is the easy route, but doing so can cause a person to become controlled by debt too easily.

TIP! If you have an attorney, select one that has years of experience with bankruptcy. Rest assured, however, that you can find an ample selection of qualified attorneys.

Most people end up filing for personal bankruptcy because they owe more than they make. If this describes your situation, it makes sense to become familiar with relevant laws. Most states differ in their laws governing bankruptcy. You may find your home is safeguarded in one state, while in another it isn?t. Become acquainted with local bankruptcy laws before filing.

TIP! If you are worried about your car being repossessed, consult your attorney about trying to get the monthly payment lowered. Often, you can negotiate a lower payment through bankruptcy.

Think about other options before you file for bankruptcy. One of these choices is consumer credit counseling. Various non-profit companies are out there to give you assistance. They can negotiate with each of your creditors to work out payments that you can afford, along with reduced interest rates. You make payments to them and they pay your creditors.

TIP! If you?re considering filing for bankruptcy, it is critical that you assess what events and behaviors brought you to this point. Getting waylaid by an unexpected loss of income or a huge expense like emergency medical treatment is unavoidable, but impulsive spending is a problem that has to be addressed.

You may end up losing more than you bargained for when you file a bankruptcy claim, so be sure that you know just which assets may be taken before filing. There are several assets which are exempt from bankruptcy; therefore, consult the Bankruptcy code. It is important to be aware of this list so you will know what assets are saved. If you don?t read it, you could have nasty surprises pop up later due to your prized possessions being seized.

TIP! After you go through bankruptcy you will need to rebuild your credit. One way to do this is through a new line of credit.

There are good things as well as bad, in regards to filing for bankruptcy. Regardless of what your reason for declaring bankruptcy is, it is vital that you keep informed and involved in the entire process. You will have an easier time with your bankruptcy filing thanks to this article?s tips. Use these tips smartly to make the best decision possible

Measuring the universe's 'exit door'

Friday, September 28, 2012

The point of no return: In astronomy, it's known as a black hole ? a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes that can be billions of times more massive than our sun may reside at the heart of most galaxies. Such supermassive black holes are so powerful that activity at their boundaries can ripple throughout their host galaxies.

Now, an international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy ? the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

The scientists linked together radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a telescope array called the "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) that can see details 2,000 times finer than what's visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. These radio dishes were trained on M87, a galaxy some 50 million light years from the Milky Way. M87 harbors a black hole 6 billion times more massive than our sun; using this array, the team observed the glow of matter near the edge of this black hole ? a region known as the "event horizon."

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

Doeleman and his colleagues have published the results of their study this week in the journal Science.

Jets at the edge of a black hole

Supermassive black holes are the most extreme objects predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of gravity ? where, according to Doeleman, "gravity completely goes haywire and crushes an enormous mass into an incredibly close space." At the edge of a black hole, the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls in everything from its surroundings. However, not everything can cross the event horizon to squeeze into a black hole. The result is a "cosmic traffic jam" in which gas and dust build up, creating a flat pancake of matter known as an accretion disk. This disk of matter orbits the black hole at nearly the speed of light, feeding the black hole a steady diet of superheated material. Over time, this disk can cause the black hole to spin in the same direction as the orbiting material.

Caught up in this spiraling flow are magnetic fields, which accelerate hot material along powerful beams above the accretion disk The resulting high-speed jet, launched by the black hole and the disk, shoots out across the galaxy, extending for hundreds of thousands of light-years. These jets can influence many galactic processes, including how fast stars form.

'Is Einstein right?'

A jet's trajectory may help scientists understand the dynamics of black holes in the region where their gravity is the dominant force. Doeleman says such an extreme environment is perfect for confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity ? today's definitive description of gravitation.

"Einstein's theories have been verified in low-gravitational field cases, like on Earth or in the solar system," Doeleman says. "But they have not been verified precisely in the only place in the universe where Einstein's theories might break down ? which is right at the edge of a black hole."

According to Einstein's theory, a black hole's mass and its spin determine how closely material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. Because M87's jet is magnetically launched from this smallest orbit, astronomers can estimate the black hole's spin through careful measurement of the jet's size as it leaves the black hole. Until now, no telescope has had the magnifying power required for this kind of observation.

"We are now in a position to ask the question, 'Is Einstein right?'" Doeleman says. "We can identify features and signatures predicted by his theories, in this very strong gravitational field."

The team used a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI, which links data from radio dishes located thousands of miles apart. Signals from the various dishes, taken together, create a "virtual telescope" with the resolving power of a single telescope as big as the space between the disparate dishes. The technique enables scientists to view extremely precise details in faraway galaxies.

Using the technique, Doeleman and his team measured the innermost orbit of the accretion disk to be only 5.5 times the size of the black hole event horizon. According to the laws of physics, this size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole ? the first direct observation to confirm theories of how black holes power jets from the centers of galaxies.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland and Antarctica, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

The Longform Guide to Sea Creatures

There is no hook whatsoever for a collection of stories about sea creatures?except, of course, that sea creature stories are the absolute best and should be read at all times. Some favorites:

The Squid Hunter

David Grann ? The New Yorker ? May 2004

An obsessive marine biologist gambles his savings, family, and sanity on a quest to be the first to capture a live giant squid.

?In 1999, O?Shea studied what few had ever seen?the corpse of a baby Architeuthis, which was discovered off New Zealand. He described its curious morphology: two eyes spread disconcertingly far apart; a parrot-like mouth concealing a raspy, serrated tongue; eight arms extending outward from a torpedo-shaped head. Each elastic limb was lined with hundreds of suckers, ringed with sharp teeth. The skin was iridescent, and filled with chromatophores?groups of pigment cells?that allowed it to change colors. A funnel near its head could shoot out clouds of black ink. The specimen also had two extraordinary-looking clubbed tentacles. (When a giant squid is mature, they can stretch up to thirty feet.)

Armed with this rare expertise, O?Shea has spent the last five years mapping out where to find a baby giant squid and puzzling over how to catch one and grow it in a tank. This year, he told me, he would venture out during the summer nights of the Southern Hemisphere, when giant squid released their babies. ?Come on down, mate,? he said. ?We?ll see if we can?t find the bloody thing and make history.??

David Foster Wallace ? Gourmet ? August 2004

A trip to a lobster festival leads to an examination of the culinary and ethical dimensions of cooking a live, possibly sentient, creature.

?In any event, at the Festival, standing by the bubbling tanks outside the World?s Largest Lobster Cooker, watching the fresh-caught lobsters pile over one another, wave their hobbled claws impotently, huddle in the rear corners, or scrabble frantically back from the glass as you approach, it is difficult not to sense that they?re unhappy, or frightened, even if it?s some rudimentary version of these feelings ?and, again, why does rudimentariness even enter into it? Why is a primitive, inarticulate form of suffering less urgent or uncomfortable for the person who?s helping to inflict it by paying for the food it results in? I?m not trying to give you a PETA-like screed here?at least I don?t think so. I?m trying, rather, to work out and articulate some of the troubling questions that arise amid all the laughter and saltation and community pride of the Maine Lobster Festival. The truth is that if you, the Festival attendee, permit yourself to think that lobsters can suffer and would rather not, the MLF can begin to take on aspects of something like a Roman circus or medieval torture-fest.

Does that comparison seem a bit much? If so, exactly why? Or what about this one: Is it not possible that future generations will regard our own present agribusiness and eating practices in much the same way we now view Nero?s entertainments or Aztec sacrifices? My own immediate reaction is that such a comparison is hysterical, extreme?and yet the reason it seems extreme to me appears to be that I believe animals are less morally important than human beings; and when it comes to defending such a belief, even to myself, I have to acknowledge that (a) I have an obvious selfish interest in this belief, since I like to eat certain kinds of animals and want to be able to keep doing it, and (b) I have not succeeded in working out any sort of personal ethical system in which the belief is truly defensible instead of just selfishly convenient.

Given this article?s venue and my own lack of culinary sophistication, I?m curious about whether the reader can identify with any of these reactions and acknowledgments and discomforts.?

John Seabrook ? Harper?s ? June 1994

Stalking the disappearing bluefin tuna, the world?s most valuable wild animal.

?The giant tuna, seen from the perspective of the flying bridge, is a radiant yellow-and-blue shape, about ten feet under the water. The immense bulk of the trunk, contrasted with the long, slender dorsal fin, gives the fish a singular appearance. Giant tuna have astounded human beings for thousands of years. The oldest Punic coins are engraved with tuna. Aeschylus compares the slaughter of Persians by the Greeks at the Battle of Salamis to the butchering of tuna. Aristotle believed that giant tuna got so fat because they fed on acorns from oak trees that grew on the bottom of the ocean. Pliny the Elder describes a confrontation between a school of giants and the fleet of Alexander the Great that caused Alexander to draw up his ships in battle formation.

Brooks, leaning over the pulpit, throws the harpoon at the tuna. The colors shiver and disappear. "Damn!" Brooks shouts into the water. ?Goddamn!? Timmy groans over the loudspeaker. Brooks yells, "Did you see him look at me?" He is still staring down into the water. ?He rolled over and looked me right in the eye!??

Tom Bissell ? VQR ? December 1998

A trip to Scotland and an investigation of enduring belief.

?It has been described as ?one of the most enduring, and controversial, images of the twentieth century.? Well, no?but it remains, after seven decades, the best photo ever taken of Loch Ness?s most putative inhabitant. Its influence has been determinative: few referred to a ?monster? before this photo?s 1934 publication and no one has thought of it since as anything but. In 1992, an American woman claimed to have spied a sea serpent in the Pacific Ocean and described it as resembling ?the picture of the Loch Ness monster.? No one had to ask which picture she was talking about.?

Brendan Kiley ? Stranger ? June 2009

On the mysterious and moderately intelligent giant Pacific octopus.

?Buster's tank, the guide tells the schoolchildren, sits on top of a rock outcropping with an underwater octopus den. After watching Buster's coy performance, you could, in theory, jump out the window, swim to the bottom, and wrestle another one out of a cave.

Not that you'd want to. Giant Pacific octopuses are, well, giant?the largest ever found, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, was 600 pounds and 31 feet from tentacle to tentacle?and they're disproportionately strong, all muscle and protein. While trying to escape, a 40-pound octopus at the Seattle Aquarium once pushed a 60-pound weight from the top of its tank. They have venom for drool and their mouths look like something from Alien: two sharp beaks hiding a drill-like instrument called a radula that scrapes through thick shells to paralyze whatever's inside before the octopus sucks out its innards.

And sometimes they attack divers.?

Where's Willy?

Susan Orlean ? The New Yorker ? September 2002

A profile of a celebrity whale.

?But Keiko?which means ?lucky one? in Japanese?is the most watched whale in the world. He has a satellite tag and a VHF transmitter and three nonprofit organizations vested in him, along with millions of spectators, waiting to see if this famous, accomplished, celebrated whale, who has lived most of his life as a pet, will take to the wild. Every day that Keiko is on his own, his location is tracked by satellite, relayed over the Internet, and then plotted on a marine chart in the Free Willy/Keiko Foundation offices in the Westman Islands, a row of neatly pencilled ?X?s tracing his arcing route through the sea.?

Donovan Hohn ? Harper?s ? January 2007

In 1992, a Chinese freighter tipped violently in a storm dumping a load of plastic floating infant toys?7,200 red beavers, 7,200 green frogs, 7,200 blue turtles, and 7,200 yellow ducks?to the open sea. This is their story.

?Where had they gone? Into the Arctic? Around the globe? Were they still out there, traveling the currents of the North Pacific? Or did they lie buried under wrack and sand along Alaska?s wild, sparsely populated shores? Or, succumbing to the elements?freezing temperatures, the endless battering of the waves, prolonged exposure to the sun?had they cracked, filled with water, gone under? All 28,800 toys had emerged from that sinking container into the same acre of water. Each member of the four species was all but identical to the others?each duck was just as light as the other ducks, each frog as thick as the other frogs, each beaver as aerodynamic as the next. And yet one turtle had ended up in Signe Wilsonhot tub, another in the jaws of Betsy Knudson?s labrador, another in the nest of a sea otter, while a fourth had floated almost all the way to Russia, and a fifth traveled south of Puget Sound. Why? What tangled calculus of causes and effects could explain?or predict?such disparate fates??

Kickstarter Will Not Save Artists From the Entertainment Industry's ...

by Evgeny Morozov

To see how the highly decentralized world of social media could disrupt the hegemony of established taste-makers in music, design, or fashion, look no further than Kickstarter. Just like Wikipedia redefined the process of creating an encyclopedia, this poster child of the crowdfunding revolution could redefine how dreamers raise funds for their next gadget or film?and perhaps even beget a cultural renaissance.

All of this sounds beautiful in theory. Have a great idea for a new project? Simply sign up for Kickstarter and post a description (don?t forget to make a glitzy video in support), set your fundraising target and the deadline, create a panoply of rewards tied to various contributions (for instance, $5 might get you the new CD, but $5,000 would also get you a dinner with the musician), and spread the word about the campaign. If you meet the fundraising target, Kickstarter takes a 5 percent cut and the project goes ahead?if you don?t, no money changes hands. The platform is enjoying tremendous success: Earlier this year, one of its founders proclaimed?to some controversy?that in 2012 Kickstarter might distribute more money ($150 million) than the National Endowment for the Arts (its budget for the year is $146 million).

Such phenomenal success has attracted its fair share of criticisms. Some, like NPR, have bashed Kickstarter for being rather opaque about how it deals with projects that, once funded, provide few (or questionable) updates on their progress, face significant delays, or never deliver at all. Those aren?t few: A recent study from the University of Pennsylvania looked at 47,000 Kickstarter projects and found that more than 75 percent deliver with delays. It?s hard to say how many projects never deliver, as for Kickstarter ?never? is a rather flexible term: Instead of acknowledging failure, many doomed projects simply drag on indefinitely, providing no updates and constantly postponing the launch date.

Delays are particularly common among projects that go viral and raise far more money than originally planned. Kickstarter has few incentives to safeguard such projects from their own viral success: The organization takes a cut from all money raised. And while Kickstarter expects that projects that don?t deliver will eventually compensate their backers, it has no way to enforce such a policy.

As the projects advertised on Kickstarter move beyond entertainment and start tackling problems like urbanism and designing more livable cities, it?s no longer enough to evaluate them solely in aesthetic and functional terms. For example, architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange has taken issue with the narrow, gadget-driven approach to solving complex urban problems that Kickstarer encourages. ?You wouldn?t Kickstart a replacement bus line for Brooklyn, but you might Kickstart an app to tell you when the bus on another, less convenient line might come. You can?t Kickstart affordable housing, but the really cool tent for the discussion thereof,? wrote Lange in Design Observer. A community that is channeling its energy into crowdfunding a new urban park might be less prone to participate in the boring but consequential urban planning meetings at the local town hall.

All of these are substantial, potent criticisms, and the company has addressed at least some of them. But one of the assumptions that has mostly gone untested is that Kickstarter, with its great emancipatory potential to free creative artists from the shackles of the entertainment industry, would revitalize our culture, make it more diverse and less dependent on the conservative or greedy gatekeepers.

A new article in the latest issue of Media, Culture, and Society by the Danish academic Inge Ejbye S?rensen challenges this assumption and tells a more complex story about the impact of sites like Kickstarter on the culture industry. S?rensen studied how crowdfunding has affected documentary filmmaking in the United Kingdom. Britain stands out from other countries in that most of its documentaries are produced and fully funded by one of its four main broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5) that dictate the terms to the filmmaker. In this context, crowdfunding seems liberating, even revolutionary.

But, as S?rensen points out, this revolution has a few mitigating circumstances. First, Kickstarter might produce many new documentaries, but the odds are that those documentaries will be of a very particular kind (this critique also applies to other sites in this field like indiegogo.com, sponsume.com, crowdfunder.co.uk, pledgie.com). They are likely to be campaign and issue-driven films in the tradition of Super Size Me or An Inconvenient Truth. Their directors seek social change and tap into an online public that shares the documentary?s activist agenda. A documentary exploring the causes of World War I probably stands to receive less?if any?online funding than a documentary exploring the causes of climate change.

Second, some films require significant startup costs (think drama-documentaries or history movies) or involve considerable legal risks that may be hard to price and account for. Say you are making a film that includes an undercover investigation of the oil industry. When you have the BBC?s lawyers backing you up, you?ll probably take many more risks than when you are relying on crowdfunding. But if Kickstarter is your platform of choice, you?ll probably forgo venturing into the thorny legal issues altogether.

Both of these arguments show the danger of viewing the nimble and crowd-powered Kickstarter as an alternative (rather than a supplement!) to the behemoth that is the BBC. This might fit quite nicely with David Cameron?s rhetoric of the ?Big Society??whereby individuals take on the roles formerly performed by public institutions?but it would be a mistake to treat the two approaches as producing the same content only through different means. Some content is just unlikely to get crowdfunded.

Most interestingly, S?rensen argues that there are few reasons to believe that Kickstarter and its brethren would weaken the dominance of TV broadcasters or film festivals?the cultural gatekeepers that crowdfunding seeks to circumvent. Those behind the documentaries that make it big online know how to leverage?rather than renounce?their status in the industry. They play up the fact that their director might have won an Oscar or that their producer has a solid track record or that some TV broadcasters have already expressed interest in the film. This makes perfect sense: To assess a film?s odds of success (because even crowdfunders don?t want to back a loser), a prospective funder would want to know what people in the know?who are part of the ?industry? in one way or another?make of it. This is the point often missed by those hailing Kickstarter as a revolutionary project that could emancipate the artists: What defines potential ?success? for their film is still very much defined by the industry heavyweights.

A recent Kickstarter initiative to raise funds for an indie film called Hotel Noir is a case in point. The project has successfully raised its target of $50,000. But what do they need the money for? To get the film distributed the old way?via cinemas. Here is how the film?s director put it: ?We need to put the movie in a theater in New York and L.A. because ideally, we want this movie not just on VOD and digital platforms but ALSO on good old-fashioned, popcorn-serving movie theaters. ? [W]e believe that a run in New York and L.A.?while FANTASTIC?could be the start of something bigger.? Obviously, the assumption here is that this ?something bigger? would not just naturally happen on iTunes or YouTube.

As S?rensen notes, ?although crowdfunding and crowd investment ventures ? are often perceived as level playing fields with no or low entry barriers, it is not only the material capital, but very much also the cultural capital that a project is able to accumulate which determines whether a film receives funding in the first place and, subsequently, reaches a significant audience.?

From this perspective, the power of the cultural gatekeepers might only get entrenched?albeit now it would function in a much more invisible and decentralized manner. The industry would still get the filmmakers to do what it wants?only now everyone would believe in self-empowerment, Oprah-style. Not a reason to oppose crowdfunding as such?only a reminder that we need to embrace it with a critical, perhaps even skeptical, mind.

Economy created more jobs than 1st estimated, US says

By Reuters

The U.S. economy likely created 386,000 more jobs in the 12 months through March than previously estimated, the Labor Department said on Thursday in a preliminary estimate of its annual "benchmark" revision to closely watched payrolls data.

Once a year, the department compares its non-farm payroll data, based on monthly surveys of a sample of employers, with a much more complete database of unemployment insurance tax reports.

It said its latest comparison suggests the level of employment in March was 0.3 percent higher than it had previously stated.

A final benchmark revision will be released in February along with the department's report on employment in January. Government statisticians will use the final benchmark count to revise payroll data for months both prior to and after March.

Related story: Jobless claims drop to lowest in two months

A breakdown by industry sector showed 453,000 more total private sector jobs were created than initially thought, including 145,000 more jobs in the trade, transportation, and utilities category, plus 85,000 more in construction.

NanoDays 2013 kit applications are now open
(Nanowerk News) NanoDays 2013 will be held on March 30 through April 7, 2013. NanoDays is a week of community-based educational outreach events to raise public awareness of nanoscale science, technology and engineering throughout the United States. NanoDays kits are currently in production and will be ready for distribution in January 2013. We invite you to fill out an online application for a physical kit containing all of the materials and resources you need to start planning your community events; applications are due December 1, 2012 (link to pdf is here).
Who can participate in NanoDays?
NanoDays kits are intended for use in public events; most host organizations are informal science education institutions and public outreach programs of nanoscience research centers. We invite you and your organization to participate in NanoDays 2013, whether or not you have previous experience with nano public outreach activities.
What kinds of kits are there and who is eligible to apply?
There are two forms of kits: physical and digital. They contain content and instructions on the same set of activities. You can apply online for a physical kit from now until December 1, 2012, or download a digital version of the kit after January 15, 2013. Two hundred and twenty-five (225) physical kits will be distributed for NanoDays 2013.
Physical kits are designed for informal science educational institutions (such as museums and research center outreach programs) within the United States. Eligibility guidelines are available here. To apply for a physical kit, go to http://www.nisenet.org/nanodays and follow the directions for the online application due by December 1, 2012. Applications will be reviewed and you will be notified of your kit status in late December 2012. Applications include a description of your planned events or activities during the NanoDays week; strong applications will include plans for using the NanoDays kit during the rest of the year. A PDF of the online application is attached for reference; however, applications should be submitted online using Survey Gizmo.
Digital kits are free, downloadable materials available to anyone who registers on nisenet.org. The digital version of the kit is designed particularly for international locations outside the United States, K-12 educators, libraries, and other educational organizations. Many of the activities use inexpensive, readily available supplies. Digital kits will be available for free download after January 15, 2013 at http://www.nisenet.org/nanodays. You do not need to fill out an application for a digital kit; however, you do need to have a profile on nisenet.org and log in to download these resources.
We did NanoDays last year ? do we need a new kit?
This year?s kits contain several new programs and activities and new training and promotional resources. We encourage you to apply for a new physical kit even though you may still have materials from last year.
I want to do activities in the summer, and can?t plan programs in March or April (the NanoDays period) ? can my institution still participate?
We strongly encourage you to target activities within the formal NanoDays period for two main reasons. First, holding numerous events within a limited timeframe is a great way to enhance the visibility of our collective efforts nationwide. Second, the NISE Network uses these events to collect data about the project to help inform future work and to report to the National Science Foundation. We realize that there may be scheduling conflicts that make it difficult for your organization to hold activities within the short NanoDays period. If this is the case, you may still apply, but you should clearly describe your plan for using the kit in your application. If you have any questions about using NanoDays material, feel free to contact your regional hub leader (contact information at www.nisenet.org/community)
I don?t work in a museum or nano research center ? how can I get involved?
Events are coordinated regionally and locally through museums, research centers, and other community partners. If you don?t already have contact with a museum or research partner that is hosting NanoDays, we can help you find them. Look for the geographic regional hub that corresponds to your location and contact your regional hub coordinator for how to get involved (www.nisenet.org/community).

Dickey gets 20th win, leads Mets over Pirates 6-5

NEW YORK (AP) ? R.A. Dickey was so close yet so far from 20 wins, faltering from fatigue and fuming he had failed to seize the moment.

"About the fourth or fifth inning I felt exasperated. I was not myself today for the most part," he said.

"And then I'd come out for an at-bat and I would hear this kind of growing surge, and it really was neat. I mean I don't know if I've ever experienced something like that before. Maybe I never will again. Although I wasn't distracted from the moment, how could you not be motivated to go out there and give the fans and, well, your teammates and yourself all that you have?" he said.

Absorbing the energy from 31,506 fans at the final home game of another sorry Mets season, Dickey summoned his strength and concentration. David Wright boosted him into the lead with a tiebreaking three-run homer, and Dickey led New York over Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Thursday to become the first knuckleballer in more than three decades to win 20 games.

"It's like a big exhale," Dickey said.

Throwing his hard knuckler at up to 78 mph, Dickey (20-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings, tying his career high with 13 strikeouts and walking two.

With New York winding up its fourth straight losing season, he capped a trinity of highlights that began with the first Mets no-hitter by Johan Santana in June and continued with Wright setting the team career hits record on Wednesday.

"This was about R.A. today," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It was about him. It was about his connection with the fans, the connection with the city. And so I said use that."

Quite a turnaround from 2010, when Dickey began the season at Triple-A Buffalo and had to prove he belonged in the majors. And from last year, when he was 8-13.

The 37-year-old had never won more than 11 games in any previous season is just 61-56 in his big league career.

"I was the picture of mediocrity by my own admission," he said.

But in the late stages of his career, he has mastered the knuckler ? a pitch that has flummoxed most of those who have tried and must survive on fastballs.

"I think everybody here today would have taken one swing where they thought they were going to crush one and they swung right throw it," Pirates outfielder Travis Snider said.

Dickey had never set a numerical goal for his pitching.

"It's just much more for me if I can really harness the moment and suck the marrow out of every second, then I've done what I want to do and I can be satisfied," he said.

Dickey became the first 20-game winner for the pitching-proud Mets since Frank Viola in 1990 and the first knuckleballer to accomplish the feat since Houston's Joe Niekro in 1980, according to STATS LLC. Viola also reached 20 with a win over the Pirates.

New York had altered its rotation, giving Dickey a chance to win 20 at home. The fans gave Dickey his first ovation when he walked to the bullpen to warm up. He waved his cap as they applauded when he walked off after his 128th and final pitch ? his most in eight years ? and got a final round of applause when he returned to the field for a postgame interview that was broadcast over the stadium sound system.

"Growing up, you just want to compete. And once you have the weaponry to compete, you want to be really good," he said. "And then when you're really good, you want to be supernaturally good. And I think for me there's been this steady kind of metamorphosis from just surviving to being a craftsman. Ultimately the hope is to be an artist with what you do."

The milestone following two life-changing events. He authored a book last spring, "Wherever I Wind Up," revealing he was a sexual abuse victim when he was 8. And he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the Bombay Teen Challenge.

"When you get to a comfort level about who you are and you don't have secrets and you feel the freedom to be who you feel like you're called to be, that's something," Dickey said. "Is this the result of the cathartic experience of writing the book, I don't know. I'm going to say this, it certainly hasn't hurt. And to be comfortable in your own skin, which I was not for so long in my life, there's something to that."

His memorable year began with a climb to the 19,341-foot Uhuru Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

"He was taking his career and putting it in jeopardy, putting it in harm's way," Collins said. "You don't know what's going to happen. But it wasn't about him. It has never been about him."

Dickey joined Washington's Gio Gonzalez (20-8) as the top winners in the majors. They figure to duel for the NL Cy Young Award.

Dickey fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 and overcame an outstanding, climbing catch by Snider more than 2 feet above the right-field wall that robbed Mike Baxter of a tying home run in the second inning.

Former Texas teammate Rod Barajas hit an opposite-field RBI double that hopped the right-field wall in the second, and Jordy Mercer following with a run-scoring infield single.

Ike Davis led off the bottom half with his 31st homer, but Barajas boosted the lead to 3-1 when he homered on an 0-2 pitch in the fourth, a drive over the old 16-foot wall in left. Kevin Correia (11-11) gave up Scott Hairston's RBI single in the fourth and Murphy's tying single in the fifth before Wright hit an opposite-field drive to right for his 21st home run this season and a 6-3 lead.

Dickey was watching on TV in the clubhouse at the time.

"There were times he picked us up and really carried us as a team on his back," said Wright, happy to provide the hit that made the difference.

Dickey said after the seventh inning he was "pooped," but Collins sent him out for the eighth.

"I said, look, this ballpark is filled with energy today. Use it to your advantage," the manager recalled. "These people deserve to see you walk off the mound."

Responded Dickey: "Don't leave me hanging."

Jon Rauch, pitching on his 34th birthday, came in after a two-out walk, finished the eighth and allowed Alex Presley's two-run homer in the nervy ninth. Bobby Parnell retired Josh Harrison on a groundout and Jose Tabata on a flyout for his fifth save.

Dickey came back on the field for handshakes and soaked in the fans' love.

"I feel it in my face. I don't know if that makes any sense," Dickey said. "I want to get emotional. It's hard because we've had the type of season that we've had."

His family stayed back in Nashville, Tenn. ? the kids are in school ? but planned to meet him in Atlanta on Thursday night for the start of the Mets' final trip. He had some close friends at the game.

Through all the tough times, Dickey pictured this type of success in his mind.

"I never abandoned hope. I always held that out," he said. "My hope always outweighed my doubt, and that's what kind of kept me going."

NOTES: Pittsburgh, which led the NL Central at the All-Star break, lost for the 20th time in 26 games and dropped to 76-80. ... Snider gave the Pirates a memory with one of the best defensive plays of the season. He dug his cleats into the chain-link fence, hooked his left arm on top of the wall in front of the Mo's Zone seats, hoisted himself up and grabbed Baxter's drive in the webbing of the glove on his right hand well about the 8-foot wall. ... Andrew McCutchen bruised his left knee on a failed attempt at a diving catch on a soft fly to center in the seventh inning. He went 0 for 4, dropping to .332 and giving up the NL batting lead to San Francisco's Buster Posey, who went 2 for 4 and is hitting .333. ... The Mets drew 2,242,803 to Citi Field this year, down from 3.15 million in 2009, 2.56 million in 2010 and 2.35 million last year. This is the team's lowest home attendance since 2.19 million at Shea Stadium in 2003. ... Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez shaved off his mustache before the game in a charity fundraiser.

Search Engine Marketing Tips for Entrepreneurs and Small ...

September 25, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

Search engine marketing? (SEM) represents one of those marketing tools that many small businesses consider foreign and difficult to understand. I own a small business so I know how people, with minimal exposure to the concept, can feel.

Recently, I have been researching and learning from some of the most notable search engine marketing firms. My findings are astounding and I have concluded it makes almost no sense to exclude search engine marketing from general marketing campaigns.

With so many consumers utilizing the Internet today, if your marketing efforts don?t include SEM you are missing out on these eyeballs.

Search Engine Marketing Case Study

Let?s discuss a hypothetical example that explores the power of search engine marketing. This case focuses on the local real estate industry in Los Angeles.

Despite the real estate industries position as a relationship business, consumers will continue to perform their own level of market analysis to ensure they are acquiring the best deals and forming ideal relationships with real estate agents in Los Angeles.

In addition to the Internet, search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo are popular and useful for individuals searching for information concerning homes for rent. These search engines also assist prospective buyers looking for potential agencies to represent them.

Many homeowners are also constantly searching for property management companies to manage homeowners? properties. If you are in this industry, as a small business owners you should understand:

1. The top keywords searched on Google for the Los Angeles real estate market

2. The competitive landscape of those keywords

3. And where the opportunity exists for your business

Local Search Engine Marketing Example?

First, we will analyze the keyword phrase ?Los Angeles homes for rent? as an example, which garners over 27,000 searches a month or 900 searches a day. This keyword costs $0.82 for each time a searcher clicks on an ad that is triggered by this keyword phrase.

Cost per click (CPC) represents an important metric that helps marketers understand the commercial intent for a keyword. If a keyword maintains a low cost per click, it can mean the keyword does not garner significant value for firms that advertise on Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other search engines. However, there are some keywords that advertisers do not think to utilize to market their business. Yet strong demand can exist for people searching for a product or service via that keyword phrase.

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden made a raw appeal to Virginia's middle class on Tuesday, blasting the GOP presidential ticket for pushing what he says is a blueprint for boosting middle-income taxes while giving trillions in tax breaks to the rich.

Biden said Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan represent a radical and obstructionist brand of conservatism that would sacrifice education and Medicare to help the wealthy.

"Look, folks, this is not your father's Republican Party," Biden said, portraying Romney as out of touch with ordinary people and Ryan as willing to wreck the nation's finances to protect the wealthy from tax increases.

Virginia Republicans countered that it's Obama's policies that will hurt economic growth and kill jobs.

"The president's proposed tax increases will not make the next four years any better than the last. They will only stifle growth and eliminate nearly 20,000 jobs in Virginia alone," said Michael Short, a spokesman for the Republican Party in Virginia. Short argued that Romney's approach would lower tax rates for all and create 340,000 jobs in the state.

Appealing directly to the moderates who decide elections in Virginia, particularly in middle-class suburbs like Chesterfield, Biden evoked his former Senate colleague from the state.

"I would be dumbfounded if former Republican Sen. John Warner said anything like that," Biden told his audience of more than 500 people in a cramped tractor barn at a county fairground. "I would be dumbfounded. I worked with him for 30 years." Warner retired in 2009 after serving five terms. He was succeeded in office by Democrat Mark R. Warner.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this isn't even Mitt Romney's father's Republican Party," Biden continued. Romney's father, George, unsuccessfully sought the 1968 GOP presidential nomination and was governor of Michigan.

Biden bored in on the Democrats' message to middle-income voters, exploiting Romney's secretly recorded comments to donors at a private fundraiser several months ago in which he said 47 percent of Americans pay no taxes, are dependent on government benefits and consider themselves victims.

"Instead of attacking people who work for a living and pay their way, Romney should be respecting their work," Biden said. "When he said it is not my job to worry about (the 47 percent) ... then whose job is it?"

Biden spoke in Chesterfield County, which has not voted Republican in statewide elections in years. But Chesterfield, a suburb of Richmond, is rich in the middle-income families both presidential campaigns are courting.

Recent polls in the battleground state place Obama slightly ahead of Romney. Obama won Virginia in 2008, becoming the first Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson to gain victory here.

Coming Together as a Community Helps Build Us Up as a Nation

community dayCitizens actively engaged with their communities sustain American values. Whether it is at the local church bake sale, or voting in a presidential election, Americans taking part in things that are distinctly American build us up as a community. Yes, America as a whole is a community -- a large one -- but still a community.?

For the most part, we Americans all want the same things: Health, happiness, and a better tomorrow for our children. We want equal opportunity, poverty to be eradicated, a robust economy, and for people to stop abusing animals because that ASPCA commercial with Sarah McLachlan always make us feel awful.

By participating in local, state, and federal government, we set up the infrastructure to function in business and recreation. A town may vote to appropriate funds for a little league field, where families and friends will gather to cheer on the kids rounding bases and catching grounders. The kids will learn competitiveness, how to be gracious winners and not to be sore losers, coordination, and they?ll get some exercise to ward off that national security risk of obesity.

Families and communities helping one another, lifting each other up, cheering successes and soothing when tragedies occur, encouraging kids to set goals for themselves and giving them the tools they need to accomplish them ? these things are embodied in the American Dream.?

Through participating in democracy, we elect officials who hopefully hold dear the same values that we do.

The government can only do so much, and taken too far it can harm the very values it seeks to protect. How does shutting down kids? lemonade stands help advance anyone?s idea of American values?

It is through both participation in democracy and engagement with our friends and families that American values are upheld.

?

This post is part of a weekly conversation with our Moms Matter 2012 political bloggers.?To see the original question and what the other writers have to say, see "How Do We Best Sustain American Values?"

Shane Bond backs Zaheer Khan to find form ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part II ? September 24, 2012

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond on Monday backed under-fire Indian seamer Zaheer Khan to regain his lost form soon.

?Every fast bowler experiences that phase, when you just don?t get the rhythm. Nothing new in that and Zaheer is just going through a rough patch. It?s all about rhythm,? said Bond, 37, while rejecting 'too much talk'.

The 33-year-old left-arm medium pacer hailing from Maharashtra has come under fire recently, after struggling against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan in T20 matches. Whilst the veteran seamer managed to claim at least one wicket each against the Black Caps and the islanders, he struggled for penetration against the rest of the two opposition. What brought Zaheer?s performance under scrutiny was his figures of 32 for 0 against the inexperienced Afghanistan batting line-up last Wednesday.

South Africa?s World T20 squad is enjoying a two-day break at a luxury beach?in the southern Sri Lankan town of Bentota, ahead of their Super Eight campaign, commencing in Colombo, on Friday.

"We?ve had a hectic touring schedule over the last few months and we felt the next couple of days would be a great opportunity for the players to get away from cricket and to recharge their resources," said coach Kirsten.

The Proteas advanced to the next stage of the mega event after comprehensively defeating Group C competitors Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. They will return to Colombo on Tuesday to start their preparations for the Super Eight stage opener against former champions India. Australia is the third team in the group while the fourth team will be decided based on the outcome of Pakistan-Bangladesh match on Tuesday.

Niall O?Brien, the middle order batsman of Ireland, hopes to remove talismanic West Indies opener Chris Gayle early on, come their must win match against the Caribbean side on Monday night.

?Hopefully one of the main bowlers can take a scalp early,? said O?Brien while speaking to media reporters on the eve of the do-or-die match. ?Gayle?s obviously a fine player but he's human, he can make a mistake. We need to make sure we take chance when it comes," he added further.

Australia has already qualified for the Super Eight stage and the winner of tonight?s match between Ireland and West Indies will be the other team from the Group B to advance to the next stage.

Ask Her, Vol 10. Living in a BDSM relationship | Men's Confidence

Dear Bailey,

I have just finished the Fifty Shades of Grey series.? Given the runaway success of the novel and its sequels, particularly among women, do you think bondage and consensual S&M can play a healthy role in a successful, long-term relationship? I would really like to explore this type of relationship with my husband, but my friends tell me I?m twisted for wanting it.

-Laura B; San Diego, CA

?

Laura.? You are not twisted.? Far from it.? This is not only a very common fantasy, but a very common dynamic for relationships in general.? Over 50% of couples practice some form of bondage or role play that involves power exchange.? That is far from abnormal.? I myself am quite submissive to my lover (both in the bedroom and out), and I don?t think I?m twisted.? I had a good upbringing and childhood, I?m college educated, and never had any traumatic life experiences that would suggest emotional instability? but I my lover is also my Master and I?m not ashamed of that. According to Alfred Kinsey, ?in the realm of the human sexual experience, the existence of?perversity?seems highly unlikely.? ?As I am wont to do, I?ve compiled a bit of a list for your edification on the subject.? The amount of information can take up hundreds of pages, and in fact, many books have been written on the subject, but I?ll try and keep it short.

Here are my principles for a healthy full time ?50 shades? BDSM relationship.

Consent and a strong desire.

This is the basic foundation for any relationship, but it becomes especially relevant in D/s. You must choose this relationship because you want it, and you must want it enough to make it an everyday thing rather than an occasional one. You must be willing to consent to the role you have chosen, and you must follow those rules with love and desire.? You must also have a partner that is willing to take on the opposite role with equal gusto or it won?t work.? Have a conversation with your husband and be very honest and trusting.? Communication is the most important thing in a relationship, and that really goes double if you are tied up and being spanked.

Distinction between fantasy and reality.

Let?s be honest for a moment. You are not aroused at all times. Relationships go beyond the orgasm, and the same goes for a sexually charged power play relationship.? You must be willing to do this for more reasons than sexual desire.? This is not a huge ongoing role-play scenario. It?s an intensification of the power-based parameters in which you want in your everyday life. If you simply try to extend a role-play scenario into your entire relationship, you?ll find that the narrow parameters of a persona or character are simply not big enough to encompass who you are, and need to be, every hour of every day.? This is not about restricting yourself to a specific set of characteristics for an hour or two in the bedroom; it?s about bringing all of who you are to the table and offering it within a full-spectrum relationship. That means you?re doing it regardless of what you?re wearing (leather, work uniform, bunny slippers?) and where you are (bedroom, dungeon, airport, family dinner). A lot of the classic ?it?s just play? concepts that you might hear in a BDSM 101 workshop go right out the window here because what you are doing is not a scene. It becomes your way of life.

Motivation.

You must choose this from a place of strength. You do not need this; you desire it? a lot. In other words, you?re not embarking on this type of relationship because you?re co-dependent or need a D/s dynamic to be able to function in life. You cannot be making up for dysfunction in your life.? If you are, you need to see a licensed therapist, not a dominant.

Acknowledgement of equality.

You are choosing a relationship form that suits you because of your individual chemistry and fit, NOT because one of you is inherently superior, and certainly not because of gender, sex, race, age, financial situation, ability, community standing, etc.

Just because you enjoy being tied up, spanked, made to kneel for hours? whatever your kink is, doesn?t make you less of a person or unequal in any way.? You are obtaining emotional and spiritual gratification from this lifestyle, and so is your partner.? They are not better that you in any way.? You are still a strong individual, and equal in your relationship.? Never lose that or forget that.

Strong communication.

This is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING in any relationship.? Period.? Communication is essential?and that does not mean the submissive ends up baring their soul while the dominant remains impassive and aloof. Communication works both ways. So regardless of your place in a BDSM relationship, take a look at your communication patterns as they currently are, identify the places you need to improve, and work on them. Improving your communication skills is a lifelong project for most of us, and it is wise to see that as a good thing rather than as a chore. Learn to love it. Results will follow.

Support.

Full time BDSM relationships are intense. Have I mentioned that? Intense, soul-searching relationships that affect every moment of every day do not exist in a vacuum. The kind of exploration and self-revelation that so often comes with BDSM can make you go a bit nuts if you have no outside support. That support can take many forms:

  • Participation in some sort of kink community can be incredibly helpful?it can provide relationship models for you to look at and learn from or discard as needed. Even if everyone around you does their kink differently than you do, that can help you better understand who you are (and are not) and what you?re doing (and not doing).
  • Reading, workshops, discussion groups, and any number of other educational resources can similarly give you a few ideas to chew on, frameworks that may or may not work for you, and language to help you understand and express what you?re getting up to.
  • And last but not least, friends you can talk to about BDSM. Non-kinky (but kink-friendly) friends are a great start, because the kind of challenges that come up in BDSM are very similar to those in any other relationship. But frequently enough, BDSM relationship issues will also have a stigma all their own, and even the most open-minded or well-intentioned vanilla friend may have a hard time truly getting it.

A classic warning sign that a BDSM relationship is not healthy is when one of the partners tells the other not to talk about it with anyone else, or not to participate in the kink community. You of course want to maintain respect for each other and your relationship ? airing your dirty laundry for all to see or trashing your partner loudly at a play party is just not classy. But having one or two trusted friends to turn to in times of trouble can be essential, and a wise dominant will encourage the submissive to seek out support rather than discouraging it.

Patience.

You are just starting out, and this stuff takes a long time to explore in great depth.? It?s always best to start by holding back, not rushing forward. Taking on responsibility for another human being, or being taken care of in a polarized power situation is simply not something that?s wise to do quickly or carelessly. Take your time. Learn what you need to learn?about yourself, about them, about how to do this well and feel good about it.

Finally Laura, always trust your feelings and play safe.? You are embarking on a wonderful journey that can be scary, exciting, and dangerous.? Don?t be afraid to set limits, and don?t be afraid to push those limits.? It can be a very fulfilling lifestyle choice, and it?s one that I?m glad I discovered.
