The Scott Hudgens Family Foundation has pledged up to $2 million to Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) to support and expand programs that train the healthcare and life sciences workforce for the region.
The Hudgens Foundation has donated $1 million to GTC?s Legacy of Lives Campaign to establish the Life and Health Sciences Excellence Endowment Fund and Community Challenge Initiative, supporting enrollment growth and program expansion in healthcare, life sciences and emergency services.
A second $1 million gift from the Hudgens Foundation has been pledged as a challenge match opportunity to encourage other donors to establish endowments to support Gwinnett Tech?s life science and healthcare programs. Once that support is realized, these funds will be added to the endowment fund to complete the gift.

Gwinnett Tech has the largest number of life and health sciences program offerings in the state, with more than a dozen degree, diploma and certificate options in healthcare, life sciences and emergency services. Currently, more than 40 percent of all Gwinnett Tech students are enrolled in a health sciences program. The earnings from new endowments will provide needed funds to enable future enrollment growth, expansion of existing programs and the addition of new programs.
Programs in life sciences and healthcare are vital to the region?s economy and the well-being of our citizens, adds Bartels. In the metro Atlanta area, the Georgia Department of Labor reports that 10 of the 15 fastest growing jobs projected for the future are in healthcare and life sciences. For the workforce, the life science and healthcare sectors offer the potential of high wage jobs and opportunities for workers of all skill levels.
The Scott Hudgens Family Foundation is one of Gwinnett Tech?s key benefactors, underwriting efforts to support students, faculty and staff. The Foundation provided the lead funding to create the D. Scott Hudgens, Jr. Early Education Center on campus and Gwinnett Tech?s Office of Veterans Affairs, which supports veterans pursuing their educational dreams. It has also funded scholarships for enrolling students and professional development for faculty and staff. In the years since the first investments by Scott Hudgens and the Scott Hudgens Family Foundation, GTC?s enrollment has doubled.
Scott Hudgens, a World War II veteran, businessman, community leader, patriot and philanthropist, lived and worked in Gwinnett County, supporting many local charities during his lifetime. It was his wish that this support continue after his death through a foundation that would focus its efforts primarily on the continuing and evolving needs of the Gwinnett County community. Especially important to Hudgens were efforts to promote self-sufficiency through education and technical training programs, as well as veterans? affairs.
Gwinnett Tech?s Legacy of Lives campaign unites business, healthcare and civic leaders to support the education and training of the healthcare professionals needed for the region.
