I recently had a dubious experience at a retail outlet. As everyone who knows me will attest, you can rest assured good story will result. Here is my tale of woe.

I use my tools often, and take good care of them because I have respect for what they can do. I suppose most would consider me a collector. I have no use for homeowner grade tools. In other words, I plan to hand my tools down to my kids when I am gone.

I bought my Craftsman Mechanic Tool Set many years ago with the knowledge that it was an investment in a great product. ?Lifetime guarantee? is the term that resonates in my mind. I recall how proud I felt to this day.

One day while tightening up some lug nuts on a vehicle, I noticed that a plastic ring that locks in the torque setting on my Craftsman Torque wrench was broken. I had finally gotten around to taking it back to the store to swap it out, have it repaired, or at the least have some parts sent to me.

I walked in to my local Sears store with my broken torque wrench in hand, anticipating a great customer service interaction. Making a ?B? line to the tool department, I wondered how things would work out. The worst thing imaginable was having to wait if they had to send it off to be repaired. Sadly this is what really happened.

The clerk who saw me heading to the customer service area cradling the poor broken torque wrench started in an intercepting course. At about 20? away he blurted out over the din of shoppers, ?We only guarantee torque wrenches for a year, do you have your receipt?? ?No, It is much older than a year,? I said as I slowed my pace and then stood there stunned, ?I thought that craftsman tools were guaranteed for life? as we met at the counter. ?Nope? he assured me quietly, reciting the company line. ?but I only need a small part? I said sadly, ?it still sort of works.? I uttered with the emotion of a pet owner being told that their pet had a terminal illness. ?Would you like to look at the new ones?? he cheerily asked. ?Hell no!,? I yelled back as I placed it firmly on the counter with a thunk.

?Torque wrenches are not a consumable commodity like a saw blade or sandpaper,? I shouted as I left. Oh well, The truth is that I was in no mood to discus the big picture with the clerk.

I wonder if mister Sears (if there is such a fellow) has a clue what had happened? I had heard recently that Sears and the Craftsman brand were having financial problems, and I now have no doubt why. What would it have cost them to replace my tool and retain my loyalty? What are the odds that I would have bought other tools while the guy was doing the paper work? What are the odds that we would have had a great conversation about my passion for great tools, and that this blog would have been about how everyone ought to go out and invest in Craftsman tools?? ?lifetime guarantee? my ass.

Snap On Tools

Wounded, but not defeated, I went off and bought a used Snap On torque wrench from Nipa at A 2 Z Tools, anyone who can afford a snap on tool would no doubt take good care of it I thought. To be sure I had the calibration checked.

Turns out that at 190 ft lbs. (Which is more than I will ever need) it was within 2 ft Lbs, so that is close enough for me.

In the end, I now have a great tool and a better understanding of how a company that I used to respect operates. Trust me, my shadow will not be crossing the Sears threshold again.

Egypt president swears in new cabinet

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi swore in a new cabinet on Thursday that retained military chief Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi as defence minister while giving the Islamists and their allies several portfolios.

The cabinet, which took office more than a month after Islamist Morsi, reflects a precarious balance of power between the president and the military, which retains broad powers after transferring control to him.

Finance Minister Mumtaz al-Said, who served in a military-appointed government, will keep his post.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party took five cabinet seats including higher education and the information ministry, which regulates the media.

Ahmed Mekki, a former appeals court deputy judge who sided with the Islamists when the constitutional court disbanded in June the parliament they had dominated, was appointed justice minister.

Only two women, both from the outgoing government, were included in the 35-member government team -- Nadia Eskandar Zukhari at scientific research and Nagwa Hussein Ahmed Khalil at social affairs.

Zukhari is the only member of the cabinet of the Coptic Christian minority, which represents about 10 percent of the population.

Prime Minister Hisham Qandil, a self-described devout Muslim whose appointment dismayed Morsi's secular election allies, said he chose the ministers based on their competence.

"The main principle, the main criterion, was competence," he told a news conference.

"We should stop using such terms as them and us, and that this is a Christian, or a Copt, or a Muslim. All I see is Egyptians and citizens," he said.

"We are the people's government; we do not represent any trend," he said.

The little-known Qandil was irrigation minister in the outgoing cabinet before Morsi appointed him last week.

Qandil, a senior manager at the African Development Bank before heading Egypt's Nile Water Sector, has denied that he had belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood or any other party.

He said the cabinet, including eight ministers of state, will have to tackle the "enormous" economic and security challenges facing the country since Hosni Mubarak's overthrow in February last year.

In all, seven ministers will remain from the outgoing military appointed cabinet, including Said and Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr.

Former prime minister Kamal Ganzouri will become a presidential adviser, state media reported.

Morsi, who campaigned on promises to revive Egypt's economy and quickly restore deteriorating security, is eager to push through his programme with a technocratic government, his aides have said.

He met his new cabinet after it took office and tasked it with pushing through his "100 day plan" to restore security and facilitate fuel and food supplies, MENA reported.

But he must still contend with the military, which has been historically suspicious of the Islamists, and which controls the budget and retains legislative authority after a court ordered the Islamist-dominated parliament disbanded in June.

The military also dominates a powerful national security council headed by Morsi.

California professor accused of threatening rampage at son's school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California professor accused of setting a string of fires following his son's suicide has been ordered held without bail after prosecutors said he wrote emails threatening to burn down the boy's school and kill administrators and students in a shooting rampage.

Rainer Klaus Reinscheid, an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of California, Irvine, was arrested last week after police said they found him trying to set a fire in the park where his son hung himself in March.

The accusations against the 48-year-old professor come amid jitters about U.S. gun violence following a shooting rampage in Colorado by a gunman who burst into a midnight screening of the new "Batman" film last month, killing 12 people and wounding dozens more.

Reinscheid was charged with committing five arsons. Officials said he set three fires at University High School in Irvine, which his 14-year-old son, Claas Stubbe, attended. Irvine is a suburban community in Orange County, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles.

Stubbe killed himself after he was disciplined by a school administrator.

"He was angry and unsatisfied with the investigation into his son's death," UC Irvine professor Bruce Blumberg, a colleague of Reinscheid's, told the Los Angeles Times.

Orange County prosecutors asked the judge to deny Reinscheid bail and cited emails they said described his plans to burn down the high school, commit sexual assaults, murder school officials and students and then take his own life.

An Orange County Superior Court judge ordered him held without bail at least until his next court appearance next week.

The Orange County Register newspaper, citing court documents, reported that in one of the emails Reinscheid said he would find a vice principal at the school and kill him.

"I will make him cry and beg, but I will not give him a chance, just like he did to Claas. I will make him die, slowly, surely," the email said, according to the paper. "Next I will set fire to Uni High and try to burn down as much as I can, there should be nothing left that gives them reason to continue their miserable school that goes over dead bodies, only to save their scores."
