Amy Oliver causes Olympic archery shock but is ... - BBC World News

Team GB?s Amy Oliver caused a big upset in the women?s archery competition by beating Indian world no.1 Deepika Kumari, but unfortunately suffered defeat in the following round. Amy Oliver caused a major upset by beating the world?s best archer (Picture: Getty Images) Oliver was the last British archer left in the event ? and only finished 57th out the 64 archers in qualifying ? but beat her 18-year-old opponent 6-2. The shock was completed in the fourth set as Kumari left Oliver needing a nine or better with her final arrow ? and she stepped up to nail a 10-point shot. However, Oliver?s success was short-lived as she was eliminated by Indonesia?s Ika Yuliana Rochmawati in the last-16, losing convincingly 7-1. Oliver was the last Brit standing in the competition after defeats yesterday for experienced pair Naomi Folkard and Alison Williamson. Folkard came unstuck against 10th seed Mariana Avitia of Mexico while 40-year-old Williamson ? making a British record-equalling sixth Olympic appearance ? was defeated in her opener by Mongolia?s Bishindee Urantungalag.
