I write this as someone who's navigating that complexity myself.? Again, not as an expert, just as a human with life experience having her thoughts about it.

I've said no thus far, with a lot of my reasons resting in my lack of formal training (I had exactly one marriage and family class in my program, and never got to actually witness or perform any couples counseling due to a seeming problem with getting clients within the clinic) and also my ongoing evaluation of couples counseling as a whole.? I do believe that people who want to be together benefit from help and coaching about how to do that and get what they want out of their relationship.? However, I'm also wary of the strong prejudice toward heteronormative relationships that is often found in marital therapy.? I believe that if people want to get married they should get married (and have the right to, by the way) but I also don't think that marriage is necessarily a marker of commitment or maturity in the relationship.? I realized early on that I was unconsciously thinking of marriage in this perhaps overly positive way because of my own, fortunate experience with it, and retooled the way I talk with people about it as a result.

There's also the whole sexist angle, which I resist.? There is all this garbage in our society about older women being alone and how that's some kind of reflection on our diminished value.? I don't believe this at all.? I believe it's far better to be happy, with good friends and a rich life, than in a bad or destructive relationship, no matter your age or orientation or gender.? We all want love but it needs to be nourishing and honest and real.? Everyone suffers in relationships that are hostile, immature, abusive, one sided, codependent, addictive, dishonest.? I often get asked if I think there is something wrong with my client if s/he has not married one of the last few people dated.? I say to my clients that I would much rather they honestly let go of what was not nourishing and keep bravely looking than to stay in something that makes them sad, depressed, or lonely despite their best efforts.? Relationships take work, including the best of them, and you need to be able to see commitment and results from that work in order to navigate life with another person.? No one can keep on giving and giving and waiting and waiting without becoming depressed.

I guess I think the most important thing in relationships is emotional maturity--the ability to truly be yourself and let others be themselves, to be able to give and receive, be realistic, communicate openly and honestly, accept flaws, honor commitments and promises, be trustworthy, reliable, kind, warm, sincere, and brave.? It's a lot for any person to realize within themselves and definitely an ongoing project for those who take it on.? We have to know what we need and be able to speak it.? We have to see if we are with someone who is willing to listen and interested in being there for us even if they sometimes don't understand us or make mistakes.? No one can read our minds or guess what we are feeling all of the time; we're responsible for stating and growing our happiness, whether in partnership or not.??

Currently I am not sure enough of where I stand on the question of marriage or what I think the goal of doing such work might be for myself.? WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army and Marine Corps on Wednesday awarded Humvee maker AM General as well as Lockheed Martin Corp and Oshkosh Corp contracts valued at $56 million to $66 million to work on prototypes for a new truck to replace the workhorse Humvee.

AM General, which had previously been teamed with General Dynamics, and Oshkosh had entered the competition only in March, along with Navistar, which was initially part of a team with BAE Systems.

AM General's overall contract was valued at $64.5 million; Lockheed's was valued at $66.3 million and Oshkosh -- which also built a mine-resistant, all-terrain vehicle for the military's use in Afghanistan, was valued at $56.4 million.

Current plans call for the Army to buy up to 50,000 of the new vehicles, with the Marines set to buy 5,000 more.

AM General welcomed the announcement, saying it would produce 22 prototypes of its "Blast Resistant Vehicle - Off road" or BRV-O, which it said was based on over a decade of the company's investment in research, development and testing.

Navistar said it was disappointed by the news, but said there could be an opportunity to compete for a production contract once the engineering and manufacturing development phase was completed. A spokeswoman said she was not aware of any plans by the company to protest the government's decision.

No immediate comment was available from the other companies.

The Army's announcement on Wednesday said the losing bidders could proceed to develop vehicles at their own cost and risk, but needed to let the government know of any such plans within 30 days.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp. says strong results from cable operations overcame weak returns from the box-office flop "Battleship" at its Universal Pictures studio. Net income and revenue increased. In cable, average monthly fees were up 8 percent from last year to $148.57, helped by customers upgrading to faster broadband speeds and getting more premium channels. Overall, cable revenue grew 6 percent, demonstrating that Comcast continues to do better than smaller cable companies.

? Aug. 2: LinkedIn Corp. says net income fell as it spent more money to grow its business. But the professional networking site saw revenue grow faster than expected and raised its forecast for the year.

Sony Corp. says its loss worsened in the April-June quarter and it lowered earnings forecast for the fiscal year through March as it battles a strong yen and declining sales of liquid crystal display TVs and video game machines. Sales increased 1.4 percent, helped by cameras, professional broadcasting products and mobile phones.

? Aug. 8: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will take a massive charge against its earnings for the quarter through July, leading to a record loss of nearly $9 billion. The charge is the result of a writedown of the value of its services business, reflecting that the company overpaid for its purchase of Electronic Data Systems in 2008.

? Aug. 13: Online deals site Groupon Inc. says the weak European economy contributed to lower sales growth than expected, while analysts express concern that the company is increasing revenue through the less-profitable business of actually selling items, rather just directing customers to great deals. Although Groupon beat Wall Street's profit estimates in the latest quarter, investors focused on the dual concerns about growth.

? Aug. 15: Cisco Systems Inc. reports earnings that show its ambitions cramped by the global economic turmoil, but results for its latest quarter were strong enough that it announced an increase to its dividend. Cisco's sales in the latest quarter rose just 4.4 percent, as customers in Southern Europe were in the grips of a recession and government customers on both sides of the Atlantic held back.

? Monday: Apple's surging stock propels the company's value to $624 billion, the world's highest, ever. It beat the record for market capitalization set by Microsoft in the heady days of the Internet boom.

? Tuesday: Dell Inc. issues results showing that its slump deepened in its latest quarter as the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets undercut sales of its desktop and laptop computers. In a sign of further weakness ahead, Dell lowers its earnings target by 20 percent for its fiscal year ending in January.

? Wednesday: As expected, HP says it suffered an $8.9 billion loss during its most recent quarter as it accounted for its purchase of EDS, which hasn't panned out the way management envisioned. HP's revenue sank 5 percent from last year to $29.7 billion. That was about $500 million below analyst projections.

Yet another Jelly Bean update leaks for international Galaxy S3

The pace of Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean leaks is showing no signs of slowing down, with a new build leaking today, bringing the total up to three in the past week. The latest build, version XXDLH6 is based on Android 4.1.1 and has appeared online, where it's available as an ODIN-flashable .md5 file. This makes it easier to flash than the last leak (XXDLH4), which was only available as an OTA package. Note that this is for the international Galaxy S3 only (GT-i9300), and won't work on the U.S. models.

At this point, we're pretty sure Jelly Bean for the international Galaxy S3 isn't far off -- rumors suggest a possible IFA 2012 launch, and we wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to be the case. If you know your way around ODIN, and you're feeling brave enough to flash pre-release firmware, you'll find download links over at the source page. US-Pakistan tensions: Time to stop pretending we are allies?

Pakistan's former ambassador to the US suggests that American attempts to steer Pakistani policy with billions of dollars are only delaying a needed divorce and reset of relations.

The former Pakistani ambassador to Washington says the two countries should face the fact that their goals and priorities are not going to converge any time soon, and so should drop their stormy partnership to forge a ?post-alliance future? based on reality over expectations and each country?s self-interest.

?If in 65 years we haven?t been able to find sufficient common ground to live together ? maybe the best is to find friendship outside the marital bond,? says Mr. Haqqani, who was Islamabad?s ambassador to Washington until last November when he fell prey to a Pakistani political scandal.

Haqqani?s conclusion ? which he plans to explore in a book to be published next spring, entitled ?Magnificent Delusions? ? is a variation on the theme of those policy experts in both countries who say the two unhappy partners should ?divorce? rather than prolong a dysfunctional marriage where neither side likes or trusts the other.

?I?m not for [the US] declaring Pakistan an enemy,? Haqqani cautions, adding that his reason for proposing a ?parting of ways? is so that ?the important things can actually be addressed.?

One example: Pakistan?s nuclear arsenal, and ensuring that it remains secure. Without the fixation on ?a broad alliance that doesn?t exist,? he says, ?you can ? focus on the specific problem.?

He also hints that Pakistan?s bond to the US, and in particular the military and security focus of the relationship, have held Pakistan back from maturing politically in ways it might have been forced to otherwise. ?Pakistan ends up behaving like Syria, but wanting to be treated like Israel,? he says.

Haqqani spoke Wednesday at the Center for the National Interest in Washington, before taking up the academic year as a professor of international relations at Boston University ? a post he held before becoming ambassador in April 2008.
